The Coolest Toy From The Golden Era Of Toys!
On Christmas day 1969 I received it, the coolest toy ever made! At least that's how I feel, and I'm sure there are legions of 40 somethings and 50 somethings that will back me up! Think about, the toy that made more toys! This is like giving a counterfeiter his very own printing machine. My Aunt and Uncle gave me the gift and I will treasure it as my all time favorite toy. The ride home from my Grandfather's house and the wait to set it up the next morning were excruciating!
I still remember the first one I made was the big spider and bat. It bubbled up because my dad had the bright idea of painting the mold before I put the goop in! After some trial and error, toasting some and under doing some, I finally got the hang of it! To this day the smell of the original goop transports me in time, back to those wonderful times! If you notice some of the bugs such as the dragon fly, butter fly, moth and house fly are lacking wings. But luckily templates are available for collectors. Fighting men, Creeple Peeple and Giant Creepy Crawlers all came out in 1965 distribution took much longer than it does today! Soon after I got my Creepy crawler set my buddy across the street got the Creeple Peeple, they must have seen a niche in the troll doll market that was all the rage with girls of that era! Yet, they had a sinister slant that also appealed to guys.They were basically a rubber head on a pencil, that had removable arms and feet. They came with paper clothes, luckily there are templates for collectors! ( just click on templates) With Vietnam in full swing anything military, like GI Joe or Marx 8 inch soldiers, had a built in market with the boys. Thus appeared the Fighting men set. The set consisted of a soldier, weapons, helmets and wheels and barrels to be added on to a tank you made from paper. (just click on paper)
In 1966 came the Fright Factory which next to Creepy Crawlers was my second favorite Thingmaker kit. It came with molds of fangs, claws, a lock, stitches, a skeleton, tongue, eye, and a shrunken head.I believe this set was the introduction of glow in the dark goop!

Besides the kits named above special molds with Iconic characters such as Superman, Batman and Tarzan were issued on cards. Also issued on cards were some of the more popular molds, such as, the skeleton and the shrunken Head molds, Picadoo molds, Fun Flower and and water squirting Cocker Roach "Squirties."
