Okay, at first I wasn't so keen on cats! I grew up with two German Shepards. One morning, about 17 years ago, Pk showed up on our door stop, crying and wanting food. We fed her and my son wanted to keep her so I said yes. She really wasn't much trouble. She was pretty much a house cat. She didn't eat much and we put an automatic litter box in the guest bath tube, which we lined with plastic. About a year later I was made aware of a little kitten that was being fed by Joe Curtice, a kindly older black gentleman who fed any stray cat that showed up at work. I feared for the safety of this kitten because she was too trusting and not fearful of all the cars and trucks that moved about the premises. So after asking my wife, I brought her home. We named her Teeger and she has become our favorite cat. She has a very sweet disposition and had the unusual habit of sucking her tail in the morning. That brings me to Sammy our latest edition. I came across him one cold winters day. He was shaking on a piece of work equipment and was crying for food. The fact that he wasn't afraid showed me he was very hungry. I fed him my buffalo wings from my lunch and called my wife to see if I could bring him home. Like the other two cats we quickly got him fixed and had him get his battery of shots. We have a six foot fence in the back yard which keeps the females in, but Sammy, not so much!
Some of the advantages of owning cats is they generally eat less than dogs, they don't bark, they don't bite (unless picked up) ,they can be left at home with food, lots of water and an automatic litter box for at least three days! Cats seldom need a bath because they are constantly grooming themselves. They also cover their own fecal matter in the yard! If a cat starts to scratch the sofa this may be quickly remedied by quickly placing catnip on the desired card board scratching disk.

Thanks tonymac04, for your post! Tabbies are my favorite breed of cat, they are very good around people & playful by nature! Don't tell PK I said that, she'll think the other two are getting preferential treatment!
I love cats too! We have recently been "employed" by a characterful dark tabby who just moved in and told us in no uncertain terms that we were to feed him and give him a place to sleep!

Thanks Eiddwen, for your kind words! Recently Teeger came down with a serious urine infection and we thought at 15 years of age we might loose her. After a trip to the vet's & antibiotics she seems to be much better (Knock on wood). Her appetite is a big as normal.

Thanks trish1048 for your post! I think that the most responsible thing a pet owner can do is get their dogs & cats fixed, so that we can get a handle on the feral dog and cat population! Sasha looks in remarkably good condition for her age(I am assuming that is a recent photo)! It is fairly routine for cats to live in to their 20's! My wife's boss had two cats mother and daughter that both lived beyond 20.
All of my cats, and dogs, were rescues. I can't imagine my life without pets. I currently have two cats, and my avatar is my 18 yr old Sasha. Krisy is a very fat grey and beige cat. She hates to be held, but loves attention and lying on my bed. Sasha I call my velcro kitty, she is everywhere I go. She waits for me to come home, follows me around the house and her favorite place is cuddled up right next to my face.

Thanks Peggy W for your post! The cost of getting a cat fixed is well worth the piece of mind it provides! When you adopt a cat, you want to insure that you are helping the problem and not adding to it!
We also were "dog people" until our two cats...one before the other...showed up and "adopted" us. I grew up with cats and dogs but my husband had not. It is amazing how they can work their way into your lives and hearts! So good to hear that you have them spayed or neutered. Wish more people were as responsible pet owners as you are!
Thanks dutch84 for your interest! For some reason more people are allergic to cats than dogs. Perhaps in the future a cat will seek you out for adoption!
I LOVE cats! Cats always follow me around too. There are lots of cats in the streets around where I live, but my sister is allergic to cats so I can't keep any of them.

I'm sorry for the loss of your Father and your cat. New cat owner's always start with a lot of rules, like no cats in the house, on the furniture, on the bed ect. One by one they seem to fall by the waste side, when the owners come to the realization that, as Mark Twain so eloquently put it, "you can't out stubborn a cat"! Thanks for your post!
I had a cat adopt me. He was our first cat, and we had him for about eight years. He was probably five when he came to us. He wasn't welcome at first since my mom didn't want him. But slowly, he ended up in our garage, in the house, and then in our hearts. My dad fell in love with cats because of him, and may he rest in peace.
Thank you both for reading my hub! Since my son is 28 and my wife and I are empty Nesters, these three have become our kids. Pk seldom ventures outside, while Teeger wants to go out back as soon as she finishes eating. Then when she comes back in she wants to eat again! It's a vicious cycle! We kiddingly say she must have kitties Alzheimer's. We'd like to install a "Sammy cam" on Sammy to figure out where the heck he goes!

A Siamese kitten picked us. Nobody told us when he showed up at the back door that the defining trait of a Siamese is ATTITUDE. Everything had to be a certain way or he pouted. We had to be available to take care of his every wish or he pouted. Another animal for a playmate? Out of the question! In return for being his human slaves for the next 5 1/2 years, he provided companionship and (if he was in the mood) hours of entertainment. He was one-of-a-kind and could never be replaced.
