Banana Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake Recipe

Bananas Too Good For Just Bread!
I love bananas and banana bread, but I never realized how good banana bread could be until my wife made it with chocolate chips & walnuts! That took bananas to new heights, not to be out done I made banana bread with chocolate chips & walnuts and a cream cheese frosting and it tasted better still! In an attempt to take the humble banana to even greater heights I have reworked my favorite coffee cake recipe, in order to make it in to a cake and add a Streusel topping. This, in conjunction with a cup of sour cream, makes a coffee cake great for any desert, but also great for a morning breakfast., with what else, you favorite coffee!
Ingredients
CAKE
6 Tablespoons softened butter
2 Eggs
3/4 Cup brown sugar
1 Teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Cup sour cream
2 Cups all purpose flour
3 Large bananas mashed
3/4 Cup walnuts
1/4 Cup chocolate chips
STREUSEL
6 Tablespoons butter
1 Cup of toasted walnuts
2/3 Cups brown sugar
1/2 Cup all purpose flour
1/4 Teaspoon nutmeg
1 Teaspoon cinnamon
Directions
STREUSEL
In a bowl, mix flour, sugar flour, nutmeg ,cinnamon and butter until large clumps form. Break up the clumps and mix in coarsely chopped nuts.
CAKE
With a potato masher, mash up the bananas in a large mixing bowl. Next add all cake ingredients except the walnuts and chocolate chips, into the bowl with the bananas and mix with a wooden spoon until batter is smooth. Add the walnuts and chocolate chips and blend into the mixture.
In a well greased 9 inch cake pan add half of the batter, next spoon in half of the Streusel mixture, evenly over the top of the batter. Add the rest off the batter into the pan and top with the rest of the remaining Streusel. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40-50 minutes or until a wooden tooth pick comes out cleanly. Serve slightly warm or room temperature, add a scoop of coffee Ice cream for an added treat!

Comments
For me the sour cream & brown sugar are the prominent ingredients, but they all seem to work well together. The banana taste is present but not over powering. Thanks Mentalist acer for your post@
A riot of flavours comes to mind! This looks just too good to be true! I baked a banana bread according to another Hubber's recipe on Saturday and it is so delicious. Gotta try this one now! Luckily I bought some bananas this morning which no-one will eat and so I'll be able to use them in a day or two!
Love and peace
Tony
Love both bananas and chocolate, and great recipe btw! Yummy, gonna try it soon!
Thanks tonymac04 for your post! This cake tastes like coffee cake with a hint of banana coming through, I think you'll like it!
There's a lot going on in this cake walnuts, brown sugar, sour cream , bananas & chocolate! There's a little something for everybody, hope you'll try it! Thanks Spider Girl for your post!
I love banana cake and seeing this hub, banana choco chip coffee cake, wow all my faves rolled into one! :) Yummy!
Thanks twentyfive for your post! This recipe is easy & quick and it turned out really well!
Tasty hub!
Seems like capable of satisfying a variety of palates. I will definitely try that one.
Thanks oishi for your post! Like Pecan pie, this cake tastes really good with ice cream or a cold glass of milk!
If my mother was still alive I would definitely have been making this for her. She had a sweet tooth and this would seem to satisfy all kinds of flavors rolled into one. Would probably be just as good without the chocolate for those that would want more of the banana flavor to predominate. Thanks for the recipe!
You're very correct about the chocolate! It shouldn't be used in excess or it will hide the taste of the bananas! Thank Peggy W for your post!
This Banana Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake looks absolutely delicious but way beyond my capability to make:-)
However if I sweet talk my wife well enough I'm sure she would make it for me, as she is a very good cook :-)
Bookmarked for future reference ;)
Thanks agvulpes for your post & kind comments. I'm sure your wife will have no trouble with this recipe as Banana bread is one of the easier things to bake. It's just mix & bake, no sifting or kneading required!

Banana bread is a highly under rated dessert. I like to have it with cream cheese frosting sometimes, that's really good! Thanks Avamum, for your kind words & post!
I cooked Spaghetti for my wife on our second date, for some reason there's something romantic about spaghetti. Any ways, I got the idea from "Lady & the Tramp" LOL! Thanks Pegcole17 for the kind words & post!
