Can you stay on a 1500 calorie diet and still eat Fast Food?

Please read disclaimer at bottom!

I thought it would be interesting to not "brown bag it" for five days, and eat my lunches at a different fast food place every day. I want to spend about five dollars and try to come up with something besides a plain salad. My first piece of advice to anyone eating at a fast food restaurant while on a diet, is get a calorie counting guide. Many places do not have these, so research the web if you do not already have one. Once you get one keep it in the glove box of your car for next time!

On Monday I decided to make a run for the border (Taco Bell). If you go to Taco Bell make sure you know ahead of time what your'e going to order, because they have a huge menu with very few pictures. I liken it to the feeling I get when I enter a casino! I thought I would try the new "Fresco menu" . The term "Fresco" is sometimes misunderstood, they are basically tacos, and burritos that come with ground beef, chicken, steak or bean and come with extra lettuce and tomato, but no cheese. The Fresco tacos range from 150 -180 cal. and the burritos range from 330-340 cal.. So while you could have three tacos and be under 500 calories., three burritos would leave you on the brink or over 1000 cal.! The fare is about as healthy as it gets ( at less than 9 grams of fat), and with hot sauce had plenty of flavor! One word of caution, Stay away from their Fully Loaded Taco Salads! They range between 770-910 calories, the only exception being the Fiesta Taco Salad without shell. I give them two thumbs up, price(3 crispy Frescos plus drink about 4 bucks), and many choices available.

Next stop, Mikey D's AKA Mac Donald's, where I really wanted to go for two honey mustard wraps but at 260 calories each, it would put me above the 500 calories allowed as per the rules of engagement. Unlike Taco Bell, all of Mac Donald's salads are very good calorie wise ranging from 430-260 calories. I opted for the Southwest Salad with Crispy Chicken, weighing in at 430 calories. It was very good, I thought to myself I would be very happy getting this salad in any restaurant! It was tasty and very filling. I used the Vinaigrette 40 calorie dressing which wasn't bad! The wraps were an excellent value at $2.98 for two! They need to go back to the drawing board to trim 10 calories off! The salad with small drink totaled up at $6.14 which is more than you should spend for lunch, but worth every penny! Because they offered so many options, like a wrap, side salad, and drink 280 calories, or 6 piece MC Nuggets, side salad and Fruit'n Yogurt Partfait 460 calories, I give them two thumbs up!

It's hump day,so I decide to go to Subway! The best deal if you want a 6 in sub is always the daily special, today it was the Cold Cut Combo. The special changes every day, 5 different sandwiches a week, and they vary from store to store. Some of their stores do not offer these 6 in specials, so when you find one that does, keep going back! You get a 6in sub, custom made with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, bell peppers, onions, cheese and your choice of condiments. Also you get a small drink or bottled water, and choice of chips, apple slices or yogurt. At $4.40 what a deal! The specials range from about 360 calories, the BLT, to Meat Ball Sub 580 calories. The sides include apple slices 35 calories and baked potato chips 130 calories, as well as, higher calorie chips and yogurt or cookies. If you think the calories in the Meat Ball Sub are too high, and you want a combo meal the next best deal is the 12 in. Sub combo at $7.20. Get any 12 in. sub you want except the Premium Subs. Eat half and take the other half home! Your choices are vast. If your'e a Vegetarian or Vegan Subway is a must! Their 12 in. Vegetarian sub is on sale for $5.00 and it is under 500 calories! Most fast food places are 80 percent bad choices and 20 good choices Subway is just the opposite! Two thumbs Up!

Today is Thursday and I've got a date at the Colonel's aka KFC. The original recipe is the foundation that the chain was built on, but they have adapted well to the healthier eating menus that people are demanding. On special today was the $5.00 box which comes with two grilled boneless chicken fillets and any two sides and a biscuit. Also they have grilled chicken wraps for $1.49 along with chicken nuggets and side salads. I opted for the grilled chicken drumstick and thigh and order the mashed potatoes and green beans as my sides, and a drink. It totaled out at $5.82 and only a measly 395 calories! This past spring this combo was $3.95 minus the drink! I give them two thumbs up.

Finally, it's Friday and I want to celebrate with a burger! Where else BK! As far as a great burger and a good value, Burger King can't be beat! Their double cheese burgers are so cheap ( still a dollar ) they actually lose money on every one they sell! I went with the Jr. Whopper value onion rings and diet coke. The cost was only $3.18 and calorie count 490. If I was grading only value, they would be the clear winners. I felt however, that their food choices were the weakest in the field! Although their salads cost $3.99 with breaded chicken or grilled chicken, they need to be bigger! They are too expensive to be a side salad and too small to be a main course! Also they used to have wraps, which have been removed from the menu! The breaded chicken sub at 520 calories paired with a side salad and a drink, and the grilled chicken sandwich paired with a side salad and drink at 480 calories, that BK illustrates as examples under 650 calories, would both run you well over $6.00 each! It's for these reasons I give them top score for value, but worst score for menu choices! One thumb up and one thumb sideways!

The overall winner by TKO in the third round is Subway! Their selection, calorie count, freshness of product and consistent value earned them clear winners in the field! This place was built for dieters! I mean they post their calorie counts on their cups and napkins for crying out loud! The other guys hide their's! You could eat the specials here every day (meat ball sandwiches and all), and still lose a ton of weight! I guess you could gain weight eating here if you made really bad decisions, but you would have to work really hard at it!
